Microneedling e.g. with the Genuine Dermaroller device, encourages the release of growth factors resulting in the production of extra collagen which naturally diminishes as we age.
Scars, wrinkles, stretch marks and uneven skin tone are all caused or exacerbated by a lack of collagen.
As the microneedling device is rolled over the face or body, following the use of local anaesthetic cream, it creates numerous pin point punctures in the skin to "injure" it in a controlled fashion. The body then releases the growth factors to heal the injury, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.
Following any injury, whether it be accidental or surgical, the body will heal itself to a functional level. Microneedling forces even old injuries to start to heal themselves to a cosmetic level. Therefore it is a wonderful treatment for general skin rejuvenation, burns, surgical scars, stretch marks, acne scars and pigmentation, and even hair loss!
Following treatment the needle punctures close within about an hour but during that time frame the skin will absorb 40% more cream applied, right down to where new skin cells are formed deep in the dermis. Depending on the area to be treated; the needle lengths, and creams applied will differ from person to person.
After treatment the skin will be hot and red and look sunburned. By the next day it will have nearly settled, although a skin cream with an SPF 50 must be worn throughout the treatment.
A course of 3 treatments is usually necessary, although for deep scars like stretch marks 5 treatments may be required, However, some clients report their skin being much brighter and glowing after only one treatment. It takes approximately 40 days for skin cells to migrate from the germinal layer to the skin surface, so visible improvement will take at least that long. Treatments are given 6-12 weeks apart. For those who understand how body builders build up and tear apart muscle fibres to make stronger thicker muscles, microneedling works in a similar way to the skin's sub-structure.
Unlike many treatments, dermal rollering can be used for even the delicate skin around the eyes, the neck and ageing of the backs of the hands. This treatment consistently wins gold, year after year at the prestigious National Aesthetic Awards.
